Real, but surreal

Seeing skulls on TV is not the most pleasant sight. Seeing them in museums is not either. Seeing them lying in the church where "their" persons were killed, is impossible to grasp.

After spending over four months in Rwanda I have now visited some of the most haunted sites from the genocide in 1994. The first church contained the bones and clothes of 5000 persons. In the second one 10 000 were killed, and a "mass grave" containing about 41 000.

The empty eye sockets stares at you as you look back at them, and the very obvious truth, the truth of it being of a human, lies as a shadow in the back of your mind. These bones are too real, and too naked to be a former human being. The thought that all those black eye sockets once saw what you have seen, their mouth used to smile and laugh, and the terror they must have felt before they died.

The stacks of clothes on the church benches seem so old, and yet it is only 15 years ago in April. All my friends here experienced what I can only see in films, and all of them were lucky not to be among the many thousands who are now lying for everyone to see, hoping to remind people that evil

.. can only last for so long, until a better force drives it away.
